Dundee Bus Service Changes – 14/15 August 2011 v1.1 -updated 12th August 2011 with 26/26C timetable and correction re 39

From Sunday 14th or Monday 15th August 2011, there will be substantial changes to bus services across the city of Dundee. National Express Dundee are introducing a range of commercial service changes, which see the withdrawal of the Scott Street/Peddie Street section of the 4, Services 3/3A, plus the controversial 1 St Marys route (which was 1D on Sundays). However, there are many improvements. Services 1A/1B/1C will revert to their pre-March 2011 routes around St Marys and Ardler, but the 1C will continue to get there Caird Avenue. Residents of St Mays will also have Service 26 running into the scheme. Service 5 will be boosted to a bus every 10 minutes to Broughty Ferry, Forthill, Balgillo and Barnhill, but will go down to every 20 minutes along the Perth Road to Ninewells Hospital. 5’s that do not continue to/from Ninewells Hospital will now run to/from Sensation Science Centre instead, in service. Service 28S school bus is withdrawn, but there are now many more journeys on Service 26 instead – which currently has a large split in the peaks when the school bus services start/end. Services 14-14D now no longer operating on Sundays, and is now simplified to run as 14, or 14A via the Technology Park at peaks. During the week, some morning journeys on the 14 will start at City Centre via Riverside Drive, BUT nothing in the evening. On Saturdays, the 14 will start/end at Dundee City Centre via Riverside Drive all day, but no longer serving Broughty Ferry. Service 26 will now run in the evening, with one bus from Ninewells Hospital after evening visiting hours.

Then, there is the Dundee City Council contract factor, who appear to have had a welcome change of heart (or is it U-turn?) re local supported bus services. Four new routes – Service 202, 204, 206, 208, will replace the majority of the current Stagecoach 6A and 69, plus the Scott Street/Peddie Street section of the 4/4A, and Fleming Gardens area on 3/3A. These will reintroduce Saturday links to many areas, thereby reverting the council’s previous position (they were the only one in Scotland not to support any local bus services on Saturdays/Sundays). Also, supported cross-border services appear to be back – in a small way – as Service 206 will reintroduce links from Barnhill and West Ferry to Broughty Ferry Town Centre, plus crossing the border to Ethiebeaton Park, for Dobbies Garden Centre & Angus Gateway. However, these have to be paid for somehow – and you might notice that on many routes, the early morning weekday supported journeys taking quite a hit – more in some areas than others. The one remaining 22 that started/ended at St Marys no longer does this, while the early morning 36C from Mill O’ Mains to Ninewells Hospital now starts back at Whitfield Shops via the 33 route through Fintry. You are recommended to check first/last bus times on the new timetables, all are now ready for download (with one exception – Service 26 – which is explained below).

National Express Dundee Service 1/1D Dundee City Centre – Hilltown – Ardler - Ardler Village - St Marys – Downfield (1D to/from Downfield on Sundays only).

WITHDRAWN – replaced by the reinstatement of the 1A/1B and revisions to the 1C to once again serve Ardler Village. Sunday service to/from Downfield will only be covered by Service 22.

Reintroduction of these former routes, to replace the (short-lived) 1/1D. During the day, both 1A and 1B will run every 15 minutes (Monday-Saturday) or 30 minutes (Sunday), combining to provide double that on roads where both routes operate. Evening service is every hour on both routes, combing to operate every 30 minutes on roads where both routes run. There are less buses during the early morning period. Also be aware that the first 22 that runs to/from St Marys terminus will no longer do so. DOWNLOAD THE NEW 1A/1B TIMETABLE HERE.

Stagecoach in Fife Stagecoach Express X59 (St Andrews – Guardbridge for Dundee - Cupar – Glenrothes for Dundee – Ferrytoll Park & Ride – Edinburgh )

In addition to changes around Dundee, changes are also occurring in West Fife, following tender renewals and commercial service changes. None of these come into Dundee , but take a look at this post in my diary if you want to read the full story. The only one that enters the area covered by the DundeeBuses.info website is Stagecoach Express X59, which will see an extra set of peak time journeys, as a result of increased demand for this handy link. So, from Monday 15th August, there will be three new journeys, which operate Monday to Friday only;

  • 06.00 X59 Glenrothes – St Andrews
  • 06.45 X59 St Andrews – Edinburgh
  • 17.15 X59 Edinburgh – St Andrews
